We are Nathan and Clint, a passionate and dedicated couple originally from Newfoundland, now proudly calling Nova Scotia home since 2018. Our journey began with a lifelong love for animals and grew into a full-time commitment to raising exceptional, healthy, and well-socialized canine companions.

Located on our family farm, Island Canines is more than a breeding program — it is the lifestyle we have built around the animals we love. Our days are shared with a variety of animals, including horses, chickens, emus, geese, peacocks, and, of course, our cherished dogs.

Our home, our farm, and our animals are at the heart of everything we do.

Our journey with dogs began with a simple appreciation for the unique connection between humans and animals. Over time, that passion developed into a deeper purpose: raising dogs that bring companionship, comfort, and joy to the families who welcome them.

Our dogs are raised as part of our family, not separate from it.

Growing up on our farm, our puppies experience the sights, sounds, and interactions of a busy household environment. They are exposed to different animals, people, routines, and experiences that help encourage confidence and adaptability.

We believe puppies benefit from being raised in an environment where they can explore, learn, and develop naturally while receiving the individual care and attention they need.

The foundation created during these early weeks plays an important role in helping puppies transition successfully into their future homes.

The qualities needed to become wonderful family companions and potential therapy or service dog prospects

The Importance of Early Development

Building Confidence From the Very Beginning

The earliest weeks of a puppy's life are incredibly important in shaping their future confidence and behaviour.

From birth, our puppies receive intentional care designed to support their physical, emotional, and social development. We incorporate Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and provide age-appropriate experiences that encourage resilience, curiosity, and adaptability.

Our puppies are introduced to a variety of positive experiences, including different sounds, environments, people, children, other dogs, and animals. These early interactions help provide a strong foundation for becoming confident, well-adjusted companions.

We believe that thoughtful preparation during these formative weeks helps puppies transition into their new homes with greater confidence and success.

Our dedication to breeding is deeply connected to our belief in the positive impact dogs can have on human lives.

Before Island Canines, Clint spent years serving as a paramedic, a profession built on helping others through some of life's most difficult moments. The emotional demands of working on the front lines brought challenges that many first responders experience, including the lasting effects of repeated exposure to trauma.

During that time, dogs became a source of comfort, companionship, and healing. Their loyalty, presence, and unconditional love provided a sense of peace and connection during challenging moments.

That experience changed the way we viewed the relationship between people and dogs. We witnessed firsthand that dogs are not only companions — they can be sources of comfort, encouragement, and emotional support.
